You can spend a fortune and get no results.
Selling a business can be a very expensive process when you take into account Agents listing and advertising fees.
Did you get the right agent with the right focus, or did they just take your listing because you offered?
Your business is local, but will it be promoted adequately further afield?
Is the commission generated going to warrant a motivated effort to sell it for you, or will it just be one “on the books”?
Don’t get me wrong. There are many fabulous agents all over New Zealand and some will have the perfect buyer just waiting in the wings that will buy your business the moment it is presented to them. Some agents are masters of their trade.
There is also no guarantee of success either.
Fees can vary from agent to agent obviously and below I have taken a couple of examples from websites to show what fees could be.

AGENT 1
An initial compliance and marketing fee of $750.00 plus GST is applicable on all business listings. We do offer some additional marketing options such as video marketing (an additional cost may apply for this).
The broker fees are, whichever is the greater, a minimum fee of $14,750 OR 8% on the first $1 million of the sale price and thereafter at 6% over $1 million. Our fees are plus GST.
AGENT 2
Fees are typically in the range of 2-10%, with an average total business broker cost sitting around 5% This means if you sell your business for $500,000, $25,000 will be paid to your broker,
